The 0 longitude line can be any line of longitude (a meridian). The meridian that passes through Greenwich, England, is recognized as the official prime meridian, according to an international agreement.

The decision was influenced by two factors. The first was that the United States had already selected Greenwich as the foundation for its own national time zone system.

The second was that in the late nineteenth century, sea charts that used Greenwich as the Prime Meridian accounted for 72 percent of global commerce.
