- Maroon bells.
The formation of Maroon Valley is attributed to more than 300 million years of geologic activity, including sedimentation, uplift, and erosion by wind, water, and ice.
The mountains’ distinctive maroon hue was caused by the weathering of the iron-bearing mineral hematite, while Maroon Lake is located in a basin that was formed by Ice Age glaciers.

- Independence pass.
It curves around gorgeous aspen groves and follows the Roaring Fork River. There are only a few guardrails along the winding, steep, and narrow road. Although it is completely safe, drivers must drive carefully and within the speed limit.
At the top of the Pass, the road ascends to the continental divide (12,095 ft.). The street is open to traffic, but some stretches are very congested.
Watch out for all oncoming traffic, which is particularly dense during the summer weekends. About 20 miles separate Aspen from the Pass’ peak, but riders can always turn around and return to town at any time.
- The John Denver Sanctuary
Its proximity to the Roaring Fork River makes it the perfect location for a family picnic or a place of quiet reflection.
Many of the famous singer’s lyrics can be found in The Song Garden, which has native river boulders arranged in a perfect circle to symbolize the circle of life as a musical score.
One Colorado Blue Spruce was planted in the center of the circle to represent John’s spirit. Visitors won’t be left wondering where “Rocky Mountain High” came from for very long because it is such a picturesque place.
